This class might be for you if you:
- Have a fully completed draft of a full-length play and you are ready to begin rewrites. (If you are unsure if your play fits the parameters of this class, please contact us!)
- Would like to make significant process rewriting a completed draft, whether it be a first or tenth draft of a play.
- Are looking for some new creative tools you can apply to your rewriting process.
- Want to be challenged in a classroom environment that is run like a professional playwriting workshop.
- Are a new or returning Primary Stages ESPA writer.
In this class you will:
- Start by articulating and addressing your goals for this new draft.
- Present pages that are read aloud in class, receiving feedback and response to your work from the group, filtered through a series of prompts given by your instructor.
- See below for details on how each section of this class will be run!
By the end of this class you will:

- Be adept at giving and receiving useful feedback to work that is in-process.
- Have the tools you need to transform any first draft into a more streamlined, compelling work that’s ready to be heard.
More about class with Gina: Rewriting can be the scariest part of a writing process – but it can also be the most freeing. In this class, you will dive into the process of rewriting, with Gina providing tools to make rewriting a little bit less intimidating and more manageable. Gina will lead playwrights through a series of prompts, helping them articulate and understand what they wish to strengthen in their new draft, and will also lead the group in exercises that are both creative and structure-based that will make the rewriting process feel more creative and playful rather than intimidating or daunting. Playwrights will share up to 15 pages of their scripts every other week to receive feedback and keep moving forward with their newest draft. Gina always centers the playwrights and their own specific needs in the writing process of their plays, and you will be able to learn how to articulate questions that are most useful for you as you move forward on your play. Playwrights are expected to follow their own creative energy and will be encouraged to work on their play in whatever order feels most energetic, whether that be in or out of chronological order.
